The National Council says yes to the revised CO2 Act for the years 2025 to 2030, approving the bill on Wednesday by 136 votes to 34 with 26 abstentions. Most of the votes against came from the SVP parliamentary group.
The revised CO2 Act for the period 2025 to 2030 is intended to help achieve the Swiss net-zero target for 2050 and a secure energy supply. Switzerland has committed itself to this under the Paris Climate Agreement. Greenhouse gas emissions are to be halved by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
The National Council made its decisions with a possible referendum in mind and in an effort to ensure that the bill can come into force at the beginning of 2025. It backed down on the measures for more environmentally friendly fuels compared to the Council of States, but was more ambitious on others.
Like the Council of States before it, the National Council does not want to levy a tax on flights with private jets. On the other hand, it decided to support the installation of charging infrastructure for electric cars with revenue from the mineral oil tax.
