In Switzerland, the rights of married minors are to be improved. On Monday, the National Council voted in favor of a series of stricter laws drawn up by the Federal Council. However, they do not go far enough in one respect.
Like the Council of States in the spring, the National Council welcomes two key points of the bill: firstly, so-called summer vacation marriages should generally be invalid in future. These are marriages in which minors living in Switzerland are married abroad during their vacations.
The ban should apply if one of the spouses was resident in Switzerland at the time of the marriage. The National Council also agrees with the new provision that a court can now declare marriages invalid up to the age of 25 of a spouse who is married underage.
Unlike the Council of States, however, the National Council is not of the opinion that judges should be able to approve underage marriages in certain cases after weighing up the interests involved.
