Normal train services between Brig VS and the Italian town of Domodossola can resume in the next few days. Italy has extended the implementation deadline for the required new fire protection measures for railroad tunnels by a further year.
A corresponding permit from the Italian Ministry of Rail Safety was received by SBB on Sunday afternoon, as an SBB spokeswoman explained in response to an inquiry from the Keystone-SDA news agency. The implementation deadline for the fire protection measures required by the Italian authority has been extended until December 31, 2024.
However, trains between the Upper Valais and Domodossola will not be running normally again from January 1st, said the SBB spokeswoman. A certain lead time is required. However, efforts will be made to resume full operations as soon as possible. This is likely to be the case as early as next week.
It was announced on Friday that 38 weekly Intercity and Interregio train connections between Domodossola and Brig will have to be temporarily suspended from January 1, 2024 due to the lack of approval from Italy.
On Sunday evening, "Blick" had initially quoted from a statement by the Italian embassy in Bern, according to which "the fire safety regulations issued by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which provide for approval for trains passing through railroad tunnels, including the Simplon Tunnel, will come into force on January 1, 2025".
