Ticino State Councillor Norman Gobbi has temporarily relinquished his position as head of the cantonal police force. A criminal investigation was launched following a traffic accident involving the Lega politician responsible for home affairs, justice and the police in the canton.

In a statement released by his lawyer on Wednesday, Gobbi announced that he had decided to temporarily suspend himself from political responsibility for the police until the ongoing administrative and judicial investigations had been completed. The Council of State reiterated "emphatically" that he had not been involved in any criminal offense.

According to the Ticino government, it has approved Gobbi's request. According to the State Council, Gobbi's decision has no impact on the work of the police. Gobbi will be temporarily replaced by his deputy Claudio Zali.

It was announced on Tuesday that the public prosecutor's office in Ticino had initiated a criminal investigation following a traffic accident in which Gobbi was involved. The proceedings are intended to clarify whether a criminal offense was committed in connection with the incident and during the subsequent investigation. Gobbi's lawyer confirmed that the politician was involved in the accident, but that he bears no responsibility for it.

According to media reports from Ticino, Gobbi was not named in the accident report. His alcohol level is also said to have been too high during the first test.

According to a statement issued by the public prosecutor's office in Ticino on Tuesday, the case concerns an accident that occurred on November 14, 2023 near Stalvedro. It is being investigated whether a criminal offense was committed afterwards. Specifically, there are allegations of abuse of authority and favoritism. The possible criminal offenses concern a cantonal police officer and an unknown person.
