So far this year, two people have drowned in water in the canton of Ticino. This figure continues to fall, the Ticino Department of Institutions announced on Saturday.
According to this information, an 83-year-old swimmer drowned in Lake Lugano in August because he could no longer reach his boat due to exhaustion. The other fatality was a 28-year-old kayaker who died in the River Melezza in May.
In 2023, four people drowned in Ticino waters, six in 2022 and nine in 2021, according to the statement. The press release notes that this year's swimming season was shorter than in other years due to the bad weather until mid-July.
