During checks of quantity information on products from online stores in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, non-compliant information was discovered in more than one in ten samples. Incorrect units, quantities instead of weights, only approximate quantities or no information at all were given.

In total, the verification officers checked 1122 quantities in 206 online stores last year, with a complaint rate of 11.2 percent, as announced by the Federal Institute of Metrology (Metas) on Tuesday.

In order to ensure that the quantity ordered online was actually delivered, the cantonal enforcement authorities carried out an additional 699 test purchases from online stores, according to the annual report. The complaint rate for these test purchases was 13.7 percent.

More than 80 percent of the checks were carried out in local online stores. The inspectors scrutinized meat products, fruit and vegetables, dairy and cheese products, bakery and confectionery products, as well as cereals, pasta and liquids.

Incorrect gram specification

Strictly speaking, 17.9 percent of the information given on the Internet was not compliant, as Metas wrote. A widespread error was "gr" as an incorrect abbreviation for the unit gram ("g"). Without this complaint, the error rate fell to 11.2 percent.

In total, the federal and cantonal authorities tested and calibrated over 150,000 measuring instruments in 2023. The cantons were thus able to calibrate 96.8% of the measuring equipment that was due for calibration. They rejected 9.6% of these (previous year: 9.0%).

According to the press release, the Metas also inspected measuring equipment at road traffic offices for the first time. This involved speedometers, sound level meters and particle measuring devices. Problems were dealt with through measures, it said.
