One in three medical students considers changing careers after internship

A third of prospective doctors consider changing careers after their first practical experience. The reason for this is the working conditions they experienced, according to a survey of 2,300 students conducted by the Association of Medical Students (Swimsa).
After the elective study year, in which medical students work as junior assistants in a hospital for six to nine months, only 31 percent felt confirmed in their career choice, Swimsa reported on Monday.
In contrast, 34 percent of students stated in the survey that they would seriously consider giving up their career aspirations after the elective study year.
In the press release, the student association expressed concern about this trend in view of the increasing shortage of healthcare professionals.
In a position paper, the association therefore calls for a reduction in weekly working hours for assistant doctors, the possibility of part-time work, a reduction in non-medical tasks and efforts to digitalize and harmonize the Swiss healthcare system in order to make it more efficient.
