Early Thursday morning, shortly before 4 a.m., a residential building in the village center of Andermatt UR caught fire for as yet unexplained reasons. The emergency services evacuated a total of 22 people. One person, who was presumed to have been in the house at the time of the fire, is missing, as the police announced later in the morning.
The 22 people were evacuated from the house that was on fire and from surrounding buildings. The rescue service took two of them to the cantonal hospital in Altdorf due to suspected smoke inhalation, according to the Uri cantonal police. However, they were able to leave the hospital again.
When the emergency services arrived on the scene, part of the building on Gotthardstrasse was already fully engulfed in flames, according to reports. The fire departments from Andermatt, Altdorf, Hospental and Realp were able to quickly bring the fire under control and finally extinguish it. They also prevented the flames from spreading to other houses. In total, over 50 firefighters were on site.
The cause of the fire is still unclear, as is the amount of damage caused.
