The upcoming 20th edition of the Zurich Film Festival features a star guest: Oscar winner Kate Winslet is coming to Zurich on October 7. She will be honored at the festival for her career and present her new film.
Kate Winslet is one of the "most important actresses of our time", wrote the organizers of the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) in a press release on Wednesday. They refer to films such as "Titanic", "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Sense and Sensibility" and "Avatar: The Way of Water", in which Winslet had the leading role and which are among the most successful works in film history.
Blockbusters and indie films
Winslet has also worked with directorial greats such as James Cameron, Peter Jackson, Sam Mendes, Jane Campion, Michel Gondry and Marc Forster.
The ZFF is honoring Winslet with the Golden Icon Award for "her outstanding acting performance and her impressive career". "Kate Winslet is a true icon of cinema and shines through her versatility in big studio blockbusters as well as small indie productions," says Christian Jungen, Artistic Director of the ZFF.
The latest film in which Winslet plays the lead role and which she also co-produced is "Lee - The Photographer" by director Ellen Kuras. The American has made a name for herself with both feature films and documentaries; she was awarded a Primetime Emmy in 2009 and 2018 and won awards at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992, 1995 and 2002.
War photographer during the Second World War
"Lee - The Photographer" tells the story of photographer Lee Miller (1907-1977). She was a war photographer for British Vogue during the Second World War. Kuras and Winslet are working together again after the science fiction romance "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless" (2004). Winslet had the leading role back then, Kuras was responsible for the cinematography. In Zurich, Winslet will present the new film together with Lee Miller's only son Antony Penrose and co-producer Kate Solomon.
Kate Winslet, born in England in 1975, had her international breakthrough with James Cameron's "Titanic" (1997); in the film, she played the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater alongside Leonardo Di Caprio as Jack Dawson. She won her first Oscar for the leading role in "The Reader" (2008) by Stephen Daldry. She will receive the Golden Icon Award in Zurich on October 7. The 20th ZFF takes place from October 3 to 13. And "Lee - The Photographer" opens in cinemas in German-speaking Switzerland on October 17.
