The outgoing director of the famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence is to head the Capodimonte National Museum in Naples. The Italian Ministry of Culture selected the German-Italian art historian Eike Schmidt as the new director of the renowned museum, as Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano announced on Friday evening. Schmidt is one of the most important museum directors and has international experience, said Sangiuliano at the presentation.
The Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in the southern Italian city is one of the most important art institutions in Italy. All schools of Italian painting are represented in the collections. The art collection includes works by Caravaggio, Michelangelo and Sandro Botticelli. The museum is also home to the second largest collection of drawings in Italy after the Uffizi in Florence.
Eike Schmidt only recently took on Italian citizenship. Born in Freiburg, he has been director of the world-famous Uffizi Gallery in Florence since 2015 - the 55-year-old is leaving the museum at the end of the year. "I was really very moved," Schmidt told the newspaper "Corriere della Sera" in reaction to the new top post. The outgoing director of the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, the German Cecilie Hollberg, is to be involved in the management of the museum in Naples, according to Sangiuliano.
