Over 40 people brought to safety during fire in Neuchâtel

A building fire in the town of Neuchâtel caused serious damage to property on Friday night. There were no injuries. More than 40 people had to be brought to safety by the police.
The alarm was received by the emergency call center at 00.47 a.m., as reported by the Neuchâtel cantonal police on Friday. Police patrols on the scene discovered that an apartment on the top floor of the building was on fire and flames were shooting out of the roof. Everyone in the five-storey building and those in the neighboring buildings had to be evacuated.
A total of 46 people were looked after by the Neuchâtel police and brought to safety in a nearby public facility. The tenants of three apartments in the building affected by the fire had to be rehoused elsewhere.
One person was arrested in connection with the fire. The police did not initially disclose the reasons for this arrest. The fire department, emergency services and police were deployed in large numbers. It was reported that the fire was quickly brought under control.
