Across Switzerland, victim support centers provided a total of 49,055 consultations in 2023. The majority of those seeking help were women. The majority of victims were able to identify the perpetrators.

The number of counseling sessions rose by around five percent compared to the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Tuesday. 73 percent of the counseling sessions were attended by female victims or relatives. Just under a fifth of the people concerned were minors at the time of counseling and slightly less than half were Swiss nationals.

In 72 percent of cases, the victims stated that they knew the alleged perpetrator. In around two out of five cases, it was the (ex-)partner, according to the report.

According to the communiqué, 46% of counseling sessions involved bodily harm or assault, a third involved blackmail, coercion or threats and 31% involved sexual offenses. It should be noted that counseling could be related to several crimes, the FSO wrote.

Last year, 1132 applications for compensation or satisfaction were submitted. In this context, the cantons paid out a total of 6.1 million francs, as the FSO further states. This corresponds to an increase of five percent compared to the previous year.
