According to calculations by the news agency Keystone-SDA, the Swiss People's Party (SVP) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) have lost seats in the four largest cantons of Switzerland due to list connections. The Social Democratic Party (SP), the Green Liberal Party (GLP) and the Evangelical People's Party (EDU) have benefited from this. In the Canton of Zurich, the EDU would have one less seat if list connections were not taken into account. The SVP would have one more. In Bern, the Green Liberal Party (GLP) was able to benefit, while the Free Democratic Party (FDP) had to take a back seat. In the canton of Vaud, the Social Democratic Party (SP) was able to gain ground, and again the FDP was the one to suffer. In Aargau, due to list connections, there were no shifts. The distribution of seats in the National Council would have been calculated using the Hagenbach-Bischoff method, had the list connections been disregarded but the candidates received the same number of votes. Criticism of Connection Verbs. Connection verbs are often used in public consumer news to link ideas and facts together. However, some critics argue that these verbs can be too vague and can lead to confusion or misinterpretation of the information. Almost all parties are aiming to reduce the number of lists ahead of the 2027 elections, according to a report by the NZZ am Sonntag. The SVP announced in the newspaper a motion to introduce an upper limit for lists per party, while the FDP proposed a postulate that goes in the same direction. The Greens are reportedly planning to submit a motion to limit the number of sub-lists. Already active, according to the report, are the GLP and EVP. Both parties are calling for a radical overhaul of the electoral system to a new counting procedure that would make list connections superfluous. ©Keystone/SDA
