The Aargau cantonal police discovered 28 live pheasants during an inspection of a car. Because some of the animals are protected species and their import had not been registered, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) initiated a criminal investigation.

Three Egyptian nationals were in the car with Slovenian license plates, as the FOCA announced on Friday. The check had already taken place at the end of September in Rothrist AG.

The veterinary service of the canton of Aargau confiscated the animals as a precautionary measure and ensured that they were suitably housed in quarantine. An assessment of the animals by experts then revealed that around two thirds of them were protected by the international species protection agreement CITES.

Four died, ten euthanized

In the meantime, four animals have died due to the stresses and strains of transportation, and ten others have had to be euthanized due to diseases that were detected. According to the BAZG, the remaining healthy animals will be placed in suitable institutions once the quarantine period has expired.
