From (today's) Monday, amateur sports clubs will benefit from financial relief when it comes to accident insurance. Athletes and coaches who do not exceed a certain annual income will no longer have to take out compulsory accident insurance with their club.
The minimum amount of such annual income is two thirds of the minimum amount of a full annual AHV old-age pension - i.e. CHF 9800 (2023). As soon as this amount is exceeded in the aforementioned functions, all persons working as coaches or athletes must be insured.
Any accident is now covered by the non-occupational accident insurance of the main employer or via accident cover with the health insurance company.
Nothing changes for all other employees, such as service personnel or cleaning staff. They are always subject to compulsory insurance in accordance with the Federal Law on Accident Insurance (UVG).
In Switzerland, all employees must be insured against accidents in accordance with the UVG. However, the search for an accident insurer can be difficult for amateur sports clubs due to the increased risk of injury and the high costs in the event of an accident.
For this reason, the Federal Council added this exemption provision for athletes and trainers to the Ordinance on Accident Insurance in November 2023.
