President Viola Amherd: “Aargau also has great joy”

The Federal Council arrived in Aarau by train from Bern on Wednesday - and is holding its meeting in a room in the cantonal parliament building. "You can see that Aargau is also very happy," President Viola Amherd told the media.
The Federal Council has never met in Aarau before, Amherd continued. Since 2010, the Federal Council has been meeting "extra muros", i.e. outside the walls. This is the 19th meeting that the national government has held outside Bern.
According to Amherd, the canton of Aargau is a key player on the Central Plateau. It has economic power and is also important for electricity production.
In addition to the government work, an aperitif with the public is scheduled for midday. This will take place in the foyer of the Aargauer Kunsthaus.
"I don't know," replied the President of the Swiss Confederation when asked if she knew where the first Federal Palace was located in Aarau. In 1798, during the Helvetic era, Aarau was the first capital of Switzerland for a few months and was also home to the first Federal Palace.
