Prisoners award the Prix Goncourt for the second time

French prisoners have awarded the "Prix Goncourt des détenus" for the second time. As announced by the French Ministry of Culture on Thursday, the prize was awarded to Mokhtar Amoudi for his book "Les Conditions idéales" (Ideal Conditions). The 35-year-old author's debut work is the story of a boy growing up in a Parisian suburb.
For this special literary prize, around 600 prisoners in 40 prisons met every week for three months to discuss 16 works that had been shortlisted for the coveted Prix Goncourt 2023, which was won in November by Jean-Baptiste Andrea for "Veiller sur elle".
Last year, the special "Prix Goncourt of Prisoners" prize went to the Swiss author Sarah Jollien-Fardel for her dramatic family story "Sa préférée".
