The proportion of older people in the Japanese population has reached a new record high: more than 36 million Japanese are at least 65 years old, making up 29.3 percent of the total population.

This puts Japan at the top of the list of countries with the highest proportion of elderly people in the total population, according to official data published on Sunday.

Italy, Portugal, Greece, Finland and Croatia are also in the top ten on the list with a share of more than 20 percent each, followed by South Korea with 19.3 percent and China with 14.7 percent.

The ageing and declining population has been a problem in Japan for years. The government is trying to combat this with various programs - so far without measurable success.
