Swiss companies will be able to recruit a maximum of 8,500 workers from countries outside the EU and EFTA in the coming year. The Federal Council is leaving the corresponding quotas unchanged.
The national government made this decision on Wednesday, as it announced. 4500 people from third countries can now obtain a B residence permit and 4000 a short-term L residence permit.
The Federal Council justified its decision with the shortage of skilled workers. The special quota for people from the UK also remains unchanged, with the maximum number of permits set at 3,500.
The background to this is the UK's withdrawal from the EU. The Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons will no longer apply to British nationals from the start of 2021. In the medium term, the Federal Council says it wants to integrate the special quota into the regular quota.
The maximum numbers for service providers from EU/EFTA states who work in Switzerland for more than 90 or 120 days per year also remain unchanged.
According to the press release, 78% of the quota for third-country nationals was used up in 2023, while 24% of the quota for workers from the UK was used up. The quotas are not expected to be fully utilized in the current year either, it said.
