According to media reports, US climate envoy John Kerry is planning to retire from US President Joe Biden's administration. The 80-year-old wants to quit as special envoy for the climate by the spring, reported the news portal "Axios", the "New York Times" and others on Saturday, citing people familiar with the plans. It is expected that the Democrat will join Biden's campaign team and support him with a view to the presidential election in November. Kerry is expected to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos next week.

Kerry has held the role of climate envoy since the beginning of Biden's term in office. He was appointed to the post at a time when Biden initiated the return to the Paris Climate Agreement. During former US President Donald Trump's years in office, the USA withdrew from the agreement. As Special Envoy for Climate, Kerry led the US delegations at several climate summits, most recently at the World Climate Conference in Dubai. Under then US President Barack Obama, Kerry was Secretary of State from 2013 to 2017.
