A team of researchers from Empa and ETH Zurich has received an award for a sensor called "SensAL". It warns of life-threatening complications after abdominal surgery. This was announced by the two institutes on Monday.
The team led by Alexander Jessernig, Alexandre Anthis and Inge Herrmann has been honored with the Empa Innovation Award. According to the press release, the award recognizes "outstanding projects that bridge the gap between the laboratory and industry".
The researchers have developed a sensor that quickly and precisely indicates when surgical sutures might be leaking. The principle is inexpensive, simple and easy to integrate into everyday clinical practice. Leaks are particularly feared after an operation, write Empa and ETH. This is because the contents of the digestive tract can enter the abdominal cavity and cause inflammation of the abdominal cavity or even life-threatening sepsis.
The Empa Innovation Award has been presented every two years since 2006. It honors outstanding innovation and technology transfer projects and is endowed with 5000 Swiss francs.
