Retail sales continue to rise in November

In November, Swiss retail sales were higher than a year ago. Although inflation contributed to some of the increase, sales also rose in real terms, i.e. adjusted for inflation, compared to both the previous year and the previous month of October.
In November 2023, sales at Swiss retailers rose by 1.6% in nominal terms compared to the previous year, according to provisional results published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday. The trend is adjusted for sales and holiday effects.
In real terms - i.e. also taking into account factors such as inflation - sales increased by 0.7% year-on-year.
Excluding the sales trend at petrol stations, sales rose by 2.0% in nominal terms (+1.0% in real terms). According to the BSF, the retail trade in food, beverages and tobacco recorded an increase in nominal sales of 1.3% (-1.4% in real terms), while the non-food sector registered a nominal increase of 2.7% (+3.1% in real terms).
Increase of 0.6 percent compared to the previous month
Compared to the previous month of October, retail sales in Germany rose by 0.6% in nominal and seasonally adjusted terms. In real terms, this resulted in an increase of 0.7% compared to the previous month. Excluding petrol stations, the retail trade recorded a nominal, seasonally adjusted increase in turnover of 0.6% compared to October (+0.6% in real terms).
In a monthly comparison, retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell by 0.4% (-0.6% in real terms). The non-food sector recorded a nominal increase of 1.6% (+2.2% in real terms).
The Federal Statistical Office's retail sales statistics are based on a random sample of around 3,000 companies. It is a monthly survey, with small businesses being asked about their monthly turnover figures on a quarterly basis.
