The umbrella organization of all Romansh language associations, Lia Rumantscha, has expressed its regret that there is still no Romansh-speaking member of the Federal Council. According to a statement, the last time the language community was represented in the Federal Council was by Felix Calonder, who was a member of the national government between 1913 and 1920.
With his Engadine roots, the multilingual Jon Pult would also have represented the Romansh-speaking community in the Federal Council, Lia Rumantscha wrote in a press release on Wednesday. It added: "A Federal Council with members from all four language communities would have been a step forward for the linguistic representativeness of the Swiss government."
Romansh-speaking Switzerland has been waiting for more than 100 years to be represented in the Federal Council again. Beat Jans (SP) from Basel, who was elected to the Federal Council on Wednesday, was the opposing candidate to Pult (SP) from Graubünden.
