According to Environment and Energy Minister Albert Rösti, the recent referendums will not be affected by the cuts. The adopted climate policy will be continued as planned.

The Federal Council stands by its commitments, Rösti told the media in Bern on Friday. Although an expert report recently proposed cuts to the Climate Act, the Federal Council will respect the goals of the Climate and Innovation Act, which was passed by the electorate last year.

The proposed savings of CHF 400 million will now be made in the building program. This program has done its job and could be scaled back, said Rösti.

Other measures, such as those called for by the care initiative, were also taken into account. The expert report also deliberately examined these items.

The freight transport bill was also not taken into account by the Federal Council. The decision on this currently lies with Parliament. The Federal Council will point out the possible savings, but the matter is in the hands of the federal parliament.

Rösti praises the debt brake

In an international comparison, Switzerland is in a very good position in terms of debt, said Rösti. One reason for this is national political responsibility. The debt brake adopted by the electorate in 2001 requires a responsible financial policy.

The instrument provides leeway at the right time and demands discipline at the right time. The low level of debt enabled the federal government to make extraordinary expenditures during the pandemic. Such expenditure will also be possible in the future. Rösti recalled the severe weather events in the summer.
