The mood of Swiss consumers deteriorated significantly in the fourth quarter. The consumer sentiment index compiled by Seco on a quarterly basis slumped from -27.0 points in the previous quarter to -40.0 points now.

The index thus remains clearly below the long-term average of -6 points, as the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) announced on Thursday.

According to the individual sub-indices, consumers' assessments of expected economic developments were significantly worse than in the previous quarter. However, assessments of the past and expected financial situation were also more pessimistic than in the previous survey. By contrast, there was little change in the assessment of the timing of major purchases.

The index is based on a survey conducted in January, April, July and October. According to the data, a total of 1078 people aged 16 and over took part in the current survey in German, French or Italian.
