The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology is warning of a considerable risk of rain in Ticino and the southern valleys of Graubünden. Rising water levels in streams, local flooding and landslides on steep slopes are possible.

In Ticino, the regions of Blenio, Riviera, Bellinzona and Sotto Ceneri were affected. In the canton of Graubünden, the storms affected Bregaglia, Moesano and Poschiavo, as reported by the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) on Tuesday.

It is recommended to avoid the banks of rivers and lakes as well as steep slopes. Streams in the mountains should also be strictly avoided due to the possibility of debris flows, wrote MeteoSwiss.

Individual thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening could lead to even higher precipitation rates in Ticino, according to the Swiss Confederation. The precipitation in Ticino is expected to end during the evening.

The runoff peaks are expected on Tuesday evening and during the night into Wednesday, the report continued. After an easing phase on Wednesday, renewed increases in runoff are forecast for Thursday. The levels of Lago di Lugano and Lago Maggiore will continue to rise due to the increased inflows.

Just last summer, storms in the Maggia Valley in Ticino caused severe damage and claimed several lives.
