Following the introduction of the 24-hour procedure in the Zurich asylum region, there are 62 percent fewer asylum seekers from Maghreb countries in the federal asylum centers. Across Switzerland, the number of these asylum seekers has fallen by 42 percent since last April.

This was announced by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) on Saturday. This procedure was introduced as a pilot project in Zurich in November 2023. Since April 2024, the SEM has been processing asylum applications from people from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya using the 24-hour procedure.

The average time until the first-instance asylum decision was reduced from 52 to 17 days thanks to the new procedures. This has noticeably eased the burden on the federal asylum structures. The number of security-related incidents in the federal asylum centers has also fallen by 42 percent, the SEM added.
