Fewer and fewer people are going to the movies in Switzerland. This trend continued in the first six months of this year - most clearly in the multiplex cinemas. Interest in US productions also declined in favor of Swiss films.
According to the first provisional figures, cinemas in Switzerland recorded around five million admissions in the first half of 2024, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office on Friday. This is six percent less than in the same period last year.
Multiplex cinemas with eight or more screens were hit harder by the decline, with a drop of twelve percent, while cinemas with fewer screens fared better, suffering a decline of two percent.
US films lost viewer favor: their market share fell from 64.3% in the first half of 2023 to 61.9% this year. By contrast, the market share of Swiss films increased: at the end of June this year, it stood at 8.9%, 1.3 percentage points higher than in June 2023.
With more than 246,800 admissions since the beginning of the year, the Swiss film "Bon Schuur Ticino", which was released at the end of 2023, has moved into third place among the most-viewed films in Switzerland in 2024. In first and second place are Kung Fu Panda 4, a US-Chinese animated action movie, and Dune: Part Two, a US science fiction film.
