Sales figures on the Swiss car market remain low in September. Compared to the same month last year, 6.6% fewer cars were registered. For electric cars, the drop compared to September 2023 was as high as 9.5%.
According to the Swiss Automobile Import Association, cars with hybrid engines are becoming increasingly popular. According to a press release on Wednesday, they are becoming the "new standard in the Swiss car market".
Specifically, 41.3% of new cars registered since the beginning of the year were equipped with a dual drive. The overall market share of plug-in hybrids, which can be charged via the power grid, remained constant at 8.6%.
Meanwhile, full and mild hybrids recorded an increase of 5.5% compared to the previous year. They now account for almost a third (32.7%) of new registrations. This means that they have even overtaken petrol engines as the most popular motorization to date with 30.2%.
Slump in e-cars
Meanwhile, all-electric cars are falling further out of favor with customers. With 32,802 new registrations in the current year, sales fell by 9.5% compared to the previous year. One of the reasons given by Auto Schweiz for the slump in sales is that the charging situation is still difficult, especially for renters.
"Charging a vehicle must become easier than refueling," says Auto Schweiz Director Thomas Rücker in the press release. In most cases, charging is already cheaper than refueling. Only at public charging stations are the prices usually not yet competitive because the construction of the charging station must first be amortized.
