Significantly more company bankruptcies in April

The number of company bankruptcies in Switzerland increased significantly in the first four months of the year compared to the same period last year. At the same time, however, more new companies were founded.

More than 2010 companies filed for bankruptcy between January and April 2024, according to the business information service Dun & Bradstreet on Thursday. This was an increase of 15 percent.

In the first quarter, there were even fewer bankruptcies than in the previous year. From January to March 2024, there were 1559 bankruptcies, which corresponds to a decrease of 4 percent.

The strongest increase in company bankruptcies was in Central Switzerland, where insolvencies soared by 35% according to the figures. This was followed by Southwestern Switzerland (+18%) and Northwestern Switzerland (+17%). In Eastern Switzerland, bankruptcies rose in line with the national average. There was a below-average increase in Zurich (+12%), Espace Mittelland (+3%) and Ticino (+2%).

Meanwhile, the number of new entries in the commercial register rose by 4% in the same period: 18,048 new companies were founded. Entrepreneurs in Southwestern Switzerland were the most keen to set up new companies, with an increase of 8 percent. Northwestern Switzerland followed with an increase of 5 percent and Espace Mittelland with 4 percent.
