Six candidates have applied to the Swiss People's Party (SP) to succeed Alain Berset. The deadline for submitting federal council candidacies expired on Sunday afternoon.
The six candidates that have already been publicly announced will remain, the Swiss People's Party (SP) told the Keystone-SDA news agency on Sunday.
Five Swiss People's Party (SP) politicians and one politician are: Basel's Government President and former National Council Member Beat Jans, Grisons National Council Member Jon Pult, Bern National Council Member Matthias Aebischer, Zurich Council of States Member Daniel Jositsch, Vaud National Council Member Roger Nordmann, and Bern Government Councillor and former National Council Member Evi Allemann.
Next, a commission will review the candidates until November 4th. From the beginning to mid-November, four public hearings will take place in different Swiss cities. These will give members of the SP Party and the public the opportunity to get to know the candidates.
On November 25th, the faction will then determine their ticket for the Federal Council election. The SP will present a selection of several candidates for the succession election. They will not rely on criteria. The successor to Alain Berset will be determined at the general renewal elections of the state government on December 13th, during the winter session.
