Snowshoer killed in an accident near the Churfirsten mountains

A 34-year-old snowshoer fell several meters into a snow-covered karst hole near the Churfirsten mountain range in the canton of St. Gallen on Saturday. He could only be rescued dead by rescue workers.
The man from the canton of St. Gallen was on a tour to the 2205-metre-high Selun with two colleagues, as reported by the St. Gallen cantonal police on Sunday. During the ascent, the three men walked side by side, with the 34-year-old heading towards the snow-covered karst hole.
As he stepped down, the snow cover gave way and he fell into the depths. His colleagues alerted Rega, which flew to the scene of the accident with rescue specialists from Alpine Rescue Eastern Switzerland. They were able to rescue the casualty. However, all help came too late for him.
It was not the first time that a snowshoer had fallen into a karst hole. The Churfirsten are known as a karst hole area.
