Vispertal Solar, a large solar energy project in the Valais region of Switzerland, has been reduced in size due to natural hazards and the lack of a power grid connection. A feasibility study has shown that the original concept must be downsized, and three solar parks in the Mattmark, Mäsweide-Rieberg and Mattwald areas are now being pursued. Field investigations have revealed that the other sites examined are not suitable for the installation of solar modules due to natural hazards such as avalanches, rockfalls, topography, environment or poor accessibility. Swissgrid, the national grid operator, has stated that the existing transmission network in western Switzerland has only one 380-kilovolt connection. This is not necessarily an obstacle to the planned solar power plants in the Valais, but it must be checked on a case-by-case basis whether and how a power grid connection can be established. Network connection projects that require a federal planning procedure take at least 15 years for planning, approval and construction. EnApin has submitted network connection applications to Swissgrid for the current solar parks, and a response is expected in August.
