The people of Solothurn have voted in favour of building a new central prison with 130 cells in Deitingen/Flumenthal. The 120 million Swiss franc loan was approved by a 60% majority, with only the results from the city of Solothurn still outstanding. This follows the recommendation of the government and most political parties, who argued that more and up-to-date cells were needed to meet the requirements of a secure and lawful deprivation of liberty. The only opposition came from the Swiss People's Party, who called it a "luxury prison". The new prison will be 156 metres long and have a floor area of around 20,600 square metres, located north of the existing prison on the A1 motorway in Flumenthal. If all goes according to plan, it should be operational by 2029.
