In the bitter dispute between the German "traffic light" coalition over economic and financial policy, the SPD leadership still sees room for compromise.
General Secretary Matthias Miersch said on ZDF's "Morgenmagazin" that the alliance with the FDP and Greens was not at an end. "I don't believe in painting the end on the wall in any way now." The coalition has "a damn responsibility in these difficult times".
Irrespective of the US election this week, it is important that there is a stable federal government that does not quarrel as it has done in recent weeks, said Miersch: Everyone has to pull themselves together. And running away is not an option."
At the end of last week, FDP leader and Finance Minister Christian Lindner called for a reorientation of German economic and financial policy in a policy paper. This is fueling the dispute within the coalition.
Miersch said: "We have a serious situation." Now we have to talk to each other. The three-party alliance has already proven that it can find common ground. He was confident that everyone was concerned with creating stability - "and I call on everyone to do so". Regarding the mood among the population, he said: "One thing is clear: everyone is annoyed."
