St. Gallen cantonal court confirms verdict against surgeon

On Wednesday, the Cantonal Court of St. Gallen confirmed a verdict of involuntary manslaughter against a surgeon. Like the lower court, the court considers the doctor to be responsible for the death of a patient. The decision is not yet legally binding.
The cantonal court dismissed the appeal and confirmed the decision of the See-Gaster district court, as can be seen from the ruling. The cantonal court thus also considers it proven that a woman bled to death in 2017 after an operation in a St. Gallen hospital due to a medical error by the surgeon.
The surgeon had argued at the appeal trial on Tuesday that he had not committed malpractice. Instead, clips that should have closed the artery after a gallbladder operation were defective.
In 2021, the See-Gaster District Court found the doctor guilty of involuntary manslaughter. It sentenced him to a conditional fine of 80 daily rates of CHF 400 each with a probationary period of two years.
