Study finds bottlenecks in the care of dying children with cancer

There are bottlenecks in the care of dying children with cancer throughout Europe. This is the conclusion of a new study by the University of Lucerne on palliative, end-of-life and bereavement care in children's cancer clinics.
The researchers examined a total of 158 clinics from 27 European countries. A third of the facilities admitted that their palliative care capacities were not sufficient to meet demand, as the University of Lucerne announced on Thursday. The results were published in the "European Journal of Cancer - Paediatric Oncology".
Despite improved treatment options, one in five children suffering from cancer in Europe still dies, the University of Lucerne emphasized in the press release. Support services for children with advanced cancer and their parents are an important help in coping with medical, psychological and social problems.
