Südostschweiz" comments online on the election of Federal Councillor Beat Jans as follows:

"The election of Jans is not least (...) an election for the canton of Basel-Stadt, which has not been represented in the national government for half a century, since the resignation of the then Federal Councillor Hans-Peter Tschudi. With Jans, the urban influence in the government will increase - hopefully the newly elected Jans will show us what the often cosmopolitan city of Basel will be able to contribute to the government. But there is one thing Beat Jans' election is not: it is not a directional election that will bring a jolt to a country that has become complacent. The 59-year-old will not instigate a turnaround, he is a consensus politician who may once have stepped on the toes of the farmers, but has since skillfully taken the right paths and avoided jostling - quite obviously. This is good for Switzerland's stability, but not automatically for the future, which is more uncertain than ever. It cannot be ruled out that the defeated Jon Pult could have provided stronger impetus here. However, a majority in the National Council and Council of States took a different view on Wednesday morning."
