The SVP delegates support the popular initiative "For secure and sustainable pension provision". On Saturday in Bürglen UR, they voted in favor of the Young Liberals' popular initiative by 216 votes to 102 with 2 abstentions. They thus followed the proposal of the party leadership.
The so-called pension initiative calls for the retirement age to be raised to 66 by 2033 and then for the retirement age to be linked to average life expectancy. In this way, the Young Finns want to ensure that pensions can be secured despite higher life expectancy.
SVP National Councillor Thomas de Courten (BL) rejected the initiative, partly because of the link to the average age. A professor lives longer than a carpenter, he said. People cannot be expected to work longer for their pension as long as Switzerland can spend millions on banks or development aid.
Nicole Roth, President of the Young SVP Baselland, on the other hand, explained that the current pension system is outdated. "If we don't act, we will bankrupt the AHV". The pension initiative could be a start towards a solution.
A Yes to the pension initiative is a Yes to low taxes, said another younger speaker. Former Federal Councillor Christoph Blocher also campaigned for the initiative. This would save the AHV. The party should show credibility and vote in favor of the initiative, even if it comes from the Young Liberals.
