The Swiss-German press has given the Olympic Games in Paris top marks. Games like those in Paris should become the standard, headlined the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" in its commentary on the conclusion of the Summer Games.

Not every organizer can work with such a cityscape, wrote the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" in a commentary on Monday. It is in the hands of the International Olympic Committee to ensure that the Games are awarded to a country where sport has a social significance and the public fills the competition venues with life, as in Paris. "The next Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032 will meet the new requirements," the newspaper wrote.

Great sporting achievements

Blick" raised sporting hopes for the next games. "The Pontis, Mosers, Ehammers and whatever their names are are all still well under 30," the newspaper wrote in its comments column. In four years' time in Los Angeles, they can still be counted on and perhaps with a medal around their necks.

Ten times, Swiss athletes didn't need much to make it onto the podium. "Blick" included runner Dominic Lobalu, who had to start for the refugee team. "The fourth-placed athletes don't deserve ridicule and malice," wrote Blick. Anyone who comes fourth or fourth at the Olympic Games has achieved great things.

Exuberant atmosphere

CH Media also put the Olympic Games themselves on the podium. "Paris 2024" surpassed previous Summer Games in two ways. "Firstly, the opening ceremony with Lady Gaga and Céline Dion was simply magnificent," wrote CH Media. "Secondly, there was an exuberant atmosphere at most of the competitions, where national affiliation sometimes took a back seat." The applause sometimes reached the decibel level of rock concerts.

At the summer games in Tokyo, which were dominated by the coronavirus pandemic, the silence was almost overwhelming, Tamedia wrote in a selection of personal anecdotes. Quite different in Paris. There, a conversation in the Stade de France was only possible again after the athletes had performed. The grandstand with a view of the beach volleyball stadium below the Eiffel Tower began to shake under the pounding of the crowd. "Chapeau, you French," wrote Tamedia.
