The airline Swiss canceled flights within Europe on Friday due to a global IT breakdown. It expected further cancellations and delays. It is not directly affected by the problems.

The IT failures had no impact on Swiss' systems, the company announced. It is doing everything in its power to get passengers to their destinations as punctually as possible. In the event of flight cancellations, it is looking for suitable solutions. Passengers should check the status of their flights before traveling to the airport.

The failed update of an anti-virus program from the IT security company Crowdstrike led to a number of problems at skyguide air traffic control, which had an impact on flight schedules at Zurich Airport. Skyguide had no difficulties at Geneva Airport. Air traffic in Basel-Mulhouse is monitored by French air traffic control.

On Friday morning, skyguide reduced the capacity of transit traffic in Swiss airspace and approaches to Zurich by 30 percent, as it announced. Aircraft that were already flying were not affected. Safety in the airspace was guaranteed.

According to a statement from Zurich Airport, landings were temporarily no longer possible. However, flights with destination Zurich that were already in the air were allowed to touch down.
