Swiss hotels welcomed significantly more guests in May than in the previous year. The industry is therefore on course to break last year's record for overnight stays.
According to the final results published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday, the hotel industry recorded 3.4 million overnight stays in May. This is 5.0 percent more than in the same month last year. From January to May, the number of overnight stays rose by 2.4 percent to 16.0 million.
Foreign guests return
Hotels benefited from the continued recovery in guest numbers from abroad. From January to May, foreign tourists accounted for 7.8 million overnight stays. This corresponds to an increase of 5.2 percent. However, this was still 1.9 percent below the last pre-corona year 2019.
At the same time, Swiss women and men were once again more likely to travel abroad. Compared to the last pre-corona year, however, they still spent significantly more vacations in their own country. The number of overnight stays fell by 0.1 percent year-on-year to 8.2 million, but was still 16.6 percent higher than in 2019.
Overall, the Swiss hotel industry remains on course to beat the guest record set in 2023, when the 40 million mark was broken for the first time with 41.8 million overnight stays. However, with the upcoming summer vacations, the seasonal peak phase for tourism is still to come.
