After a record year in 2023, the Swiss hotel industry has also made a good start to the new year 2024. According to initial estimates, hotels accommodated more guests in January than a year ago.

Hotel overnight stays rose by 2.3% in January 2024 compared to the same month last year, according to provisional figures released by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Friday. As in the previous year, foreign guests were the driving force. According to the FSO, overnight stays by foreign tourists rose by 5.0%, while those by Swiss tourists only increased by 0.1%.

On Thursday (yesterday), the FSO presented the statistics on overnight stays for the past year. Swiss hotels set a new guest record in 2023. At 41.8 million, overnight stays exceeded the 40 million mark for the first time. The previous record of 39.6 million was set in 2019.

In recent months, the hotel industry has benefited greatly from the fact that significantly more guests from abroad have been traveling to Switzerland again as travel has returned to normal in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Guests from Asia in particular spent more of their vacations in Switzerland. There were also many tourists from North America.

The definitive and absolute overnight stay figures for January will be published by the FSO on March 7.
