The Swiss population supports the "Via sicura" road safety program of the Federal Roads Office (Astra). Road safety is high, but there is still room for improvement. In a survey, speed was named as the biggest problem.

The three non-profit organizations Am Steuer Nie, Blaues Kreuz Schweiz and Roadcross Schweiz announced at their media conference on Thursday that Swiss citizens explicitly wanted speed regulations. Accident prevention is also rated as very important, especially when it comes to raising awareness of distractions caused by cell phone use or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Two thirds of respondents want a driving ban as a preventative measure for drivers who have committed alcohol-related offenses, the report continued. Follow-up training in the event of misconduct should also prevent drunk drivers from driving.

According to the clients of the representative study, inattentive behavior, excessive speed, failure to give way and driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication are among the main reasons for serious road accidents.

Overall, the "Via sicura" measures are considered to be effective in preventing road user error and thus accidents. The action program introduced in 2012 aims to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on Swiss roads. The measures are to be implemented in stages.

According to the three non-profit organizations, however, some of the measures have already been weakened or completely removed before they come into force. There are also attempts at liberalization. However, the Swiss population rejects these. A large majority of those surveyed were also against more lenient sentences for speeding offenses.

As part of the study by the market and social research institute Gfs-Zurich, a telephone and online survey was conducted with 1216 Swiss people aged 18 and over. The respondents were interviewed in November and December of last year and came from the three major language regions of Switzerland.
