According to the Federal Roads Office, the national road network is well maintained overall. However, the roadways are in better condition than tunnels, engineering structures and operating equipment.
That's what it says in the Network Condition Report 2022, which the Federal Roads Office (Astra) published on Thursday. In 2022, Astra invested around 1.1 billion Swiss francs in the maintenance of the 2254.5-kilometer network, more than the average of the last ten years.
Overall, 87 percent of the total number of installations are in good or acceptable condition, writes Astra. The report also breaks down the situation by category, and the picture varies.
Targets not met
Ninety-seven percent of the roadways are in good or average condition, and three percent are rated as adequate. The condition thus exceeds the target. However, the target has not been met for tunnels and engineering structures such as bridges and galleries, and for operating and safety equipment.
Artificial structures were rated as good or acceptable in 88 percent of cases. 11 percent had moderate damage, and about half a percent needed to be repaired or replaced, Astra wrote. Even for the structures rated as deficient, load-bearing capacity and traffic safety were guaranteed.
Three out of four tunnels assessed are in good or acceptable condition. Twenty-four percent have moderate damage and require increased monitoring. Four tunnels need refurbishment in the medium term due to poor condition.
Zurich Schöneicht Tunnel to be refurbished
According to the report, 84 percent of the operating and safety equipment in tunnels - lighting, cable systems and signaling - was in good technical condition. 9.5 percent had moderate deficiencies, and 6 percent need to be refurbished because of their poor condition.
The operating and safety equipment in the Schöneichtunnel of the A1 in the city of Zurich is in alarming condition, Astra reported. This tunnel is currently being renovated.
