A quarter of the Swiss population aged between 15 and 88 have little or no digital skills. This is despite the fact that 97 percent have a smartphone or Internet access. Swiss Post is now testing an advisory service in selected branches.

The figures come from the Federal Statistical Office, as detailed in a press release issued by Swiss Post on Monday. Surveys over the past six months have shown that customers are not only looking for advice on Swiss Post's digital services, but also outside of them. For example, they asked how to recognize phishing or had questions about their cell phone or computer. There are also inquiries about official topics.

According to Swiss Post, participation in economic, political and social life is becoming increasingly difficult for people who need to keep up with digital issues. Advantages that speak in favor of Swiss Post are the personal advice from person to person in the branches and the good relationships with the federal government and cantons.

At branches in Wetzikon, Gossau, Bülach and Kloten in the canton of Zurich, Locarno and Lugano in Ticino, Schaffhausen, Le Lignon in the canton of Geneva and Vallorbe in Vaud, Swiss Post is currently examining what support in the digital world should look like and whether personal advice would be popular. The test operation should show whether such a service could be part of the future universal service.

Advice is free of charge in the test branches until the end of July; customers are asked to fill out a survey. In all other post offices, advice on digital topics outside of the postal services is subject to a charge.
