A new lipid-based gel developed by the University of Bern can be used to deliver medication directly to an inflamed intestinal wall. This could help patients with Colitis ulcerosa, a chronic inflammation, with more targeted and fewer side effects. The gel remains attached to the intestinal wall and releases its active ingredient evenly. Tests on mice with a condition similar to Colitis ulcerosa showed improved inflammation levels and less weight loss compared to the control group. Further tests on animal models are needed before the gel can be used on humans.
