The Swisscom is not overly concerned about a potential ban of components from the Chinese telecoms provider Huawei for critical infrastructure in Switzerland. This was stated by CEO Christoph Aeschlimann during a telephone conference for analysts. He said that if a ban for Huawei were to be imposed, the Swisscom would have enough time to make the necessary changes. Aeschlimann also noted that the importance of FTTS (Fiber to the Street) will decrease in the future as the Swisscom replaces copper lines with fiber optics. The National Council of Switzerland passed a motion in May proposed by the SP-Faction which calls for a ban on IT components for critical infrastructure if the provider is directly or indirectly controlled by the government of another state, particularly if it is an autocratic state. This is a reference to Huawei. The Federal Council is against the motion and now the Council of States is in charge. A potential ban would not only affect the Swisscom, but also Sunrise, the second largest Swiss telecoms company, which uses Huawei equipment for 5G mobile networks.nnnn
