Switzerland ranks 21st in the 2023 climate protection country comparison. Compared to last year, Switzerland improved by one place in the ranking of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), but once again missed out on the top 20.
The environmental protection organization WWF announced on Friday that Switzerland's poor marks were mainly due to the low proportion of renewable energies in its energy mix and its national climate policy. This also put Switzerland behind India and the EU average, among others.
According to the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2024, Swiss policymakers lack ideas on how to achieve these targets, although Switzerland's goals are fundamentally clear. It wants to halve its emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and become climate neutral by 2050.
"Switzerland has signed the Paris Climate Agreement and stands by it," says the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) at the request of Keystone-SDA. "The recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are being followed. The measures to achieve these targets are defined in the CO2 Act, which is currently being debated in parliament."
Denmark is once again the leading nation in this year's ranking. At the bottom of the ranking are the major oil and gas producers Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.
The ranking was carried out by the NGOs Germanwatch, Newclimate Institute and the Climate Action Network. The CCPI assesses the climate protection efforts of 63 countries plus the European Union. They are all among the largest emitters and are responsible for 90 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, the report continued. The four categories assessed were greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energies, energy consumption and climate policy.
