Switzerland is participating in the European Defense Agency's Hub for European Defence Innovation (Hedi). The Federal Council hopes that this will strengthen security and jointly advance innovations in the field of defense.

The national government approved Switzerland's participation in the Innovation Hub on Wednesday. The European Defense Agency was founded in 2004 by a decision of the EU Council. It promotes European armaments cooperation, as stated in the press release accompanying the decision.

This is because it provides the member states with a cooperation platform for joint capability development and for joint armaments, research and training projects. In 2022 - three months after Russia's attack on Ukraine - the members of the Defense Agency decided to set up the Innovation Hub.

By participating in the hub, Switzerland can contribute to its activities and has a say in strategic issues. Domestic science, research and industry also benefit from the hub. Among other things, industrial companies can apply for projects and collaborations as part of the hub.
